What is the best “medicine” for head lice?

Question by amy p : What is the best “medicine” for head lice
We noticed a couple on my 8 year old son’s head / crown and I treated him with OTC treatment but I need to retreat in 7 days. It is the first time he has ever had this, but the chemicals seemed to irritate his head / neck. Any home remedies? Best answer:

I would talk to your doctor. My mom said they used to use kerosene way back. I can not recommend though. Good luck!

  1. My stepdaughter constantly got head lice from school, I was told by someone 90% rubbing alcohol, it worked!!! Lots cheaper too, but I still stripped beds, sprayed car, mattresses, carpet, etc.

  2. i would suggest baby shampoo……or rid aid (this helps if you apply and cover with a plastic bag!)….my neice uses that alot and she gets rid of all lice….but not so much of thee eggs….okay well hope this helps!!

  3. hair salad! you mix olive oil and vinegar and put it on the hair, wrap it in plastic wrap and leave it for a few hours or overnight. also, did you use rid? when i was a kid i got head lice once, and i think it was rid that we used that irritated my scalp, and we ended up using another brand, i don’t remember what, that had a different active ingredient. but hair salad works great as well! good luck

  4. It’s not the chemicals it is the chemicals and the raw spots on his head where the lice have been biting.

You can shave his head. Down here in the south it’s not uncommon to see kids with shaved heads running around looking like Sigourney Weaver’s Kids (From Alien Resurection. hehe)

You’ll still have to do the treatment but you probably won’t have to retreat again.

  5. I’ve never tried it, but I’ve heard olive oil works – but you have to leave it on for a little while, then with it still on, comb out all the nits. I’m guessing it suffocates the bugs and loosens the glue from the eggs. Ask your pediatrician.

When my kids came home with head lice, we used the OTC treatment for the first round, then washed with cat shampoo for the second, and never had a reinfestation.

  6. No, unless you shave it completly down to the scalp. Sorry. Just retreat it and bag up pillows, stuffed animals, etc. for a week to make sure they aren’t in the fabrics. Be happy you don’t have a daughter with LONG BLONDE hair…..aaagggghhh!

  7. The mayo treatment actually works. Lice have a hard time clinging to greasy hair which is why kids who shampoo alot and have a clean head usually end up victims to the critters. You would think the opposite. I also know it is way easier to take the nits out outside in the daylight. The show up better than with a house light.

  8. vinegar..when you wash his hair put vinegar in his hair, when it dries it does not smell..makes his hair shine and the fleas hate it.
I hear also if you put alcahol ( sp?) with a shower cap for a few minutes they cant tolerate it, dont know how good that would be if he has sensative skin though..

    what a nuisence!

  9. Have found the best way to get rid and avoid getting lice in the future is by using a te tree oil shampoo and conditioner. Tha problem with the stronger treatments the head lice get immune to them but i have found tea tree oil stuff great but whenever i stop using they come back

  10. GO TO A DERMATOLOGIST AND FIND OUT WHAT ACTIVE INGREDIENT YOUR SON IS ALLERGIC TO– HE PROBABLY HAS SENSITIVE SKIN –

I DON’T THINK ANY HOME REMEDIES WILL SUFFICE BECAUSE YOU ARE DEALING WITH BUGS AND THEY WILL HAVE TO BE TREATED WITH SOME TYPE OF ACTIVE INGREDIENT –

  11. put olive oil on his hair and scalp and then let it set for 1 hour with a shower cap on his head.If you take a black light you will be able to see “nits” or “nets”. then you can pull them off and into the sink to wash down.then when you wash it out blow dry it.that helps more than anything.Be sure to put all toys in gargage bag for 1 month and treat the bedding, house, hairbrushes(by boiling them).I know these things because when I was young i got head lice at school and we were poor and this is what my mama did for me and all my brothers and sisters.Hope this helps you.

  12. vinegar full strength

    or

    ammonia, watered down

either way wash for at least a few minutes…the longer he can take it, the more likely it’ll work

but ask the school nurse…she’s got to know every remedy in the book.

  13. there really is no home remedy that is 100% effective. as a hairstylist, i have seen many cases in the shop. i recommend using otc product, such as rid, follow the instructions.i know it can be a pain, but it is more of a pain if they keep coming back because they were not treated properly the first time.strip all bedding, spray all mattresses, toys, carpets, furniture, ect. until it is taken care of.follow directions, keep treating untilhair is free and comb is clean after combing.if it persists, contact your doctor,he can prescribe a prescription that is stronger than otc.

  14. Cover his haead in mayonnaise, then wrap it in glad wrap for an hour or so – this suffocates the lice. You need to repeat it after a few days to get all of the eggs once they hatch.

  15. i have found a way to keep them off, I use this on my kids. Last school year we spent half the year fighting with lice we found nothing that could get rid of it. Someone told me to go get some Sauve coconut shampoo and conditioner. there is something in the coconut that the lice dont like. We have not had any more lice since we started using it. I would recomend besides making sure all his stuff is washed, using this shampoo and conditioner. Besides being cheap it has worked so far.
